If you are sorry, then say you are sorry and leave it at that. Don’t follow it up with a “But…” and an explanation; that negates everything you said before it. If there are other things to discuss, make arrangements to have that discussion at another time. If you are not sorry, don’t pretend to be. Everyone makes mistakes; learn how to apologize.
